Zuckerberg Axes Biased Fact-Checkers, Embraces Free Speech On Facebook And Instagram

2 min read

In a significant shift towards free speech, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it will be abolishing its widely criticized third-party fact-checking program, effective immediately. CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed this major change, which comes as a response to growing demands for less censorship and more open dialogue on social media platforms.

Zuckerberg, in an address today, acknowledged the propensity for biases in favor of leftist narratives within the outgoing fact-checking system, stating, “We’re moving away from relying on external parties with apparent political leanings and instead empowering our communities to determine what’s credible and authentic.” He further explained that Meta’s platforms would be embracing a community-driven approach, similar to Twitter’s Community Notes system.

The new system, tentatively dubbed ‘Community Guardrails,’ is set to roll out in the U.S. initially, with no official timeline for expansion to other regions. The revamped structure aims to reduce policy complexities and eliminate the need for external ‘fact-checkers,’ allowing users to collectively engage in content moderation.

Conservatives have long criticized social media platforms for perceived liberal biases, and while they welcomed the news, many remained skeptical. “We’ll be watching closely to ensure this isn’t just lip service,” said one prominent conservative pundit.

Meanwhile, free speech advocates hailed the move as a victory for open discourse. “This is a step in the right direction,” said a leading proponent. “We’ve see “sh_t” over censorship for too long, and it’s about time platforms started listening to their users.”

While details about how Meta’s ‘Community Guardrails’ will function remain scarce, one thing is clear: the days of faceless, politically biased ‘fact-checkers’ are numbered on Facebook and Instagram. The social media landscape is set for a shakeup as users prepare to take the reins in shaping content moderation and expression on these influential platforms.”
