In a disturbing escalation of the administration’s war on dissent, the Biden State Department has been secretly funding a covert censorship agency, the Global Engagement Center (GEC). This shadowy entity, established in 2016 under the Obama administration but significantly expanded under Biden, is specifically tasked with combating “disinformation” and “propaganda” from America’s political opposition and conservative media outlets abroad.
The latest revelation comes from a lawsuit filed by the state of Texas, the New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA), and two conservative media outlets challenging the GEC’s unconstitutional blacklist of American websites. This blacklist, created through a partnership with the Global Disinformation Index (GDI), is used by advertising companies to demonetize and effectively censor conservative media outlets.
Through the GEC, the State Department is funneling U.S. taxpayer funds to the United Kingdom to achieve this illegal goal. By partnering with overseas entities, the GEC circumvents constitutional protections of free speech in the United States. This brazen subversion of American democracy is a clear abuse of power and a threat to the First Amendment.
The State Department’s own court filing acknowledges that the GEC’s authorization is set to expire on December 23rd, due to a sunset provision in its statutory basis. This eight-year term was established in the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act. While this imminent termination might seem like a positive development, it’s essential to ensure that this censorship apparatus is abolished permanently and not reinstated under a different guise.
The GEC’s very existence constitutes a chilling attack on free speech and poses a danger to a healthy, diverse media landscape. By targeting conservative voices, the Biden administration demonstrates its disdain for political dissent and its commitment to advancing a Democratic Socialist agenda untethered by constitutional constraints.
As this lawsuit progresses, it remains crucial that Americans stand in defense of their fundamental rights. The State Department’s attempts to suppress conservative media through foreign partnerships must be exposed and halted. The First Amendment is not a suggestion, but a bedrock principle of American democracy that must be zealously protected against all encroachments, even from within our own government.
