WASHINGTON — Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) led nearly 60 House Democrats in a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel demanding a federal probe of every hanging death of a Black American. The signers, drawn mainly from the Congressional Black Caucus and the Progressive Caucus, include Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). They call the deaths a “national crisis” and “part of the legacy of racial terror.”
Pressley did not hedge. “We cannot stand idly by while the strange fruit of Black bodies hang from trees across the country,” she told theGrio. The letter claims the cases raise “significant suspicion of foul play.” Ocasio-Cortez posted that she was “proud” to have signed on to “put a stop to this racial terror.”
Here is what the letter does not lead with. Of the high-profile hangings they wave around, medical examiners and local police have already ruled most of them suicides — including the 2025 Delta State case of Demartravion “Trey” Reed and a Georgia park death with no evidence of foul play. One 2026 case, Tasia Fortune in Mississippi, is being investigated as a homicide. Reporting on that file says the person of interest is Black. Another North Carolina death remains open. None of the cited cases has produced a public finding of a white-supremacist lynching ring.
That is the ruse. Jim Crow lynching was real, documented, and monstrous. Borrowing Billie Holiday’s “strange fruit” to rebrand ruled suicides as a wave of racial terror is not investigation. It is a fundraising script. If a death is a homicide, prosecute it. If an autopsy is sloppy, reopen it. If a family has evidence the locals buried, send the FBI. None of that requires a caucus letter that treats every hanging of a Black person as a hate crime until proven otherwise — and treats every suicide ruling as “complicity.”
The demand list is the tell: independent autopsies, audits of local police, a new federal database of Black hanging deaths, and reports to Congress. That is a political apparatus, not a case file. Blanche and Patel can review open homicides without adopting Pressley’s premise that America is hanging Black citizens from trees as policy.
Grief is not a talking point. Neither is a suicide a lynching because a member of Congress needs a headline. The dead deserve the truth on the slab, not a caucus press release.
