NEW YORK — The names were being read at the reflecting pools. A family member stood at the microphone in a shirt printed with a victim’s name. Soldiers stood still. The chyron said the rest: victims’ families honoring their dead. That is the hour when a city is supposed to shut its mouth.
The camera found Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Zohran Mamdani in the crowd. She is smiling. He is looking down. It lasts seconds. That is enough. You do not need a press release to read a face at a funeral. If the defense is “it was a private aside,” the answer is the same: then don’t stand in the front of a national wound and treat it like a rope line.
Twenty-five years on, the political class still shows up for the photo and misses the point. 9/11 was not a networking event. It was mass murder on American soil. Families still have to say the names out loud because that is all that is left. When elected officials cannot hold a straight face for that, they are telling you what the day means to them. Not grief. Not duty. Attendance.
They will call the clip unfair. Fine. Play it without the caption. The smile is still there. The podium is still there. The dead are still named. That is the whole story. They were present. They did not look like they cared.
