WASHINGTON — For half a century after the Cold War, “socialist” was a word a serious Democrat would not pin to his lapel if he wanted a majority. McGovern learned it. Mondale learned it. The party ran as the union hall and the church picnic and left the red flag in the attic. That attic is empty now. Bernie Sanders made the word electable on television. The Democratic Socialists of America stopped whispering. AOC, Mamdani, the New York sweep — the mask is not slipping. It is in the campaign photo.
What changed is not only fashion. The old coalition — mill towns, churchgoers, the man who punched a clock — walked. Some of that walk is measurable in 2016 and 2024. The replacement theory the party will not print is simpler than a conspiracy chart: if the native working class will not buy the sermon, import a new congregation and call it compassion.
The pipeline has a date stamp. The Obama years raised the refugee ceiling and moved the origin map toward conflicts in the Islamic world. Pew found Muslim share of U.S. refugee admissions rising sharply in the 2010s. CIS and State figures put tens of thousands of Somali refugees — overwhelmingly Muslim — through the Obama resettlement machine. Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan followed the same door. That is legal refugee policy, not a rumor. What is argued, not proven in a courtroom, is that the same party later treated illegal crossings and loose rolls as a second door. Citizens-only voting is still the law. Enforcement of the law is the fight.
National horse-race polls in September 2026 still show Democrats ahead on a generic ballot. That is not “collapse.” It is a different map: denser cities, newer arrivals, campuses, and a professional class that can say “democratic socialist” without flinching. The suicide of 1984 became the brand of 2026. The question for November is whether a party that swapped the mill for the mosque and the shelter can still claim the Republic’s center, or only the precincts it restocked.
The taboo died. The coalition is what they built after.
