Montgomery, AL – April 3, 2026
Alabama has become a poster child for state-run tyranny through its aggressive tax lien system. Since 2019, when corrupt elected officials quietly expanded and weaponized the state’s tax lien laws, local governments and politically connected investors have been able to seize private property over relatively small unpaid taxes — often with minimal notice and little chance for the owner to fight back.
Under the current system, a tax lien can be placed on your home, farm, or land for as little as a few hundred dollars in back taxes. Once the lien is filed, the clock starts ticking. If the owner cannot pay the full amount plus massive interest and fees within a short window, the property can be auctioned off — sometimes for pennies on the dollar — to insiders or well-connected buyers. Families who have owned land for generations are being quietly dispossessed by their own government.
Critics call it legalized theft. The 2019 changes made it easier for counties and special interests to fast-track foreclosures, reduced redemption periods, and limited the ability of property owners to challenge the process in court. Many Alabamians now believe the system was deliberately designed to transfer wealth from working families and small landowners to politically favored developers and investors.
This is not about collecting legitimate taxes. It is about power and profit. Corrupt county officials and their allies have turned a revenue tool into a land-grab machine. While hardworking Alabamians struggle to pay their bills, the state and its insiders are rewriting deeds and cashing in.
The people of Alabama deserve better than this modern form of feudalism. When government can seize your land over minor tax disputes with almost no due process, you no longer live in a free republic — you live under tyranny with a smile and a tax bill.
It’s time for a full investigation and repeal of the 2019 tax lien expansions before more Alabama families lose everything they own.
