Democrats Fighting SAVE Act Harder Than They Opposed the Civil Rights Act

Washington DC – March 23, 2026

Democrats in the Senate are waging an all-out war against the SAVE Act, a bill requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. Their ferocious opposition — complete with filibusters, procedural blocks, and hysterical rhetoric labeling it “Jim Crow 2.0” — has stunned observers. Many note that today’s Democrats appear to be fighting this commonsense election integrity measure with greater intensity than Southern Democrats fought the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964.

In 1964, a coalition of Republicans and Northern Democrats eventually overcame a 60-day Southern Democratic filibuster to pass the Civil Rights Act, ending legal segregation. While opposition was fierce from segregationists, the bill ultimately became law with bipartisan support.

Contrast that with 2026. The House-passed SAVE Act, which simply asks voters to prove they are American citizens, faces unified Democratic resistance in the Senate. Chuck Schumer and his caucus have vowed to give it “the death it deserves,” calling it voter suppression and warning it would disenfranchise millions. They have blocked amendments, threatened endless debate, and shown zero willingness to compromise on basic citizenship verification — something 80-85% of Americans support in polls.

This is no accident. Democrats know the SAVE Act closes loopholes that allow non-citizens to register and potentially vote. By fighting it harder than many of their predecessors fought civil rights, they reveal their true priority: preserving a system vulnerable to illegal votes over protecting the integrity of American elections.

President Trump and Republicans are right to demand passage. Secure elections are the foundation of our Republic. If Democrats continue this scorched-earth campaign against basic citizenship requirements, history will record them as the party that chose open borders and power over the American people.-WAA
