WASHINGTON — Most presidents go home. Woodrow Wilson stayed because he was dying. Barack Obama stayed because the work was not finished. In 2017 the family took a Kalorama mansion two miles from the White House. They bought it. They converted the garage into an office. He now describes the job as “player to coach.” Coaches still call the play. They just stop wearing the helmet.
This week the chorus found the same cliff. Booker wants a special session. Sanders wants the leash. The U.N. wants the gavel. Labs that lost their moat want a crisis that writes them a duopoly. And in a closed-door fundraiser, Obama told Democrats that AI in private hands is “dangerous” if they do not “get on top of it,” that he would make safety and “kids not corrupted” a central agenda, that job displacement is a social-safety-net problem. That is not a retired memoirist. That is a whip count. The emergency did not fall from the sky. It was spoken into the room by the man who still keeps a desk in this city.
Call it community organizing if you want the polite name. The method never required a title. Identify the institution. Staff the NGOs. Own the language. When the language fails, manufacture the scare. Green jobs was the first product. The Recovery Act wrote the checks in Chicago. Exelon learned the dialect. The bulb standard — signed by Bush, enforced and tightened under Obama — taught households that Washington could swap your fixture and call it virtue. The Green New Deal was the sequel with a louder choir. The AI panic is the same swap: your model, their license.
The opposition to Trump is not a thousand separate consciences. It is a network that already knows how to move money, headlines, and rented streets. When the Singham pipe and the sloppy ActBlue door get pressure, the daily occupations thin. When the former president says “dangerous,” the committees discover urgency. That is not proof he signs every subpoena. It is proof the organizing never left town.
A republic expects the loser of an election to become a citizen. A corporate-conglomerate keeps a coach two miles from the residence and calls every new file an emergency. If this is only coaching, close the Kalorama office and coach from the library like the others. If the office stays, stop pretending the shadows are empty.
Community organizing built a machine. A coup does not always need tanks. Sometimes it needs a fundraiser, a foundation, and a city that never made him leave.
