We Are Americans

All Roads Still Lead to Obama

WASHINGTON — Most former presidents go home. Barack Obama did not. He kept a residence in Kalorama, leased office space in Foggy Bottom, and stayed after Sasha finished high school. Only Woodrow Wilson, disabled by strokes, had remained in the capital. Obama stayed by choice. That address is the first fact in any account of how influence continued after the transfer of power.

The second fact is the network. Obama left with the National Democratic Redistricting Committee under Eric Holder, the Obama Foundation, and a generation of staff who moved into advocacy groups, foundations, and later administrations. Writers called it a shadow presidency almost at once. Direct daily orders to every street action are unproven. Continuity is not. The same personnel, the same priorities, the same refusal to leave the stage. Later expansions of parole pathways and border processing matched the Obama-era scale of refugee admissions and the institutional approach that treated American norms as adjustable.

On Somalia the numbers are narrower than viral claims. State Department data show roughly 54,000 Somali refugees admitted nationally during Obama’s eight years, with about 6,320 resettled in Minnesota. The community was already the country’s largest concentration before 2009. Census figures later confirmed Minnesota still holds the highest Somali-ancestry population in the nation. Obama did not invent the program. He ran it at scale, and the demographic result in a sparsely populated state is measurable.

The same pattern appears farther east. New York City’s Muslim population has grown sharply with recent arrivals from Senegal, Guinea, Mauritania, and other Muslim-majority African nations, alongside asylum seekers from elsewhere. Local reporting places the city’s Muslim share at roughly one in nine residents. That demographic shift supplied the backbone for the election of Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist now serving as mayor. Governor Kathy Hochul, while not a socialist herself, has campaigned with him, defended the partnership, and declined to reject the label when asked. In a 2026 interview she noted that Medicaid and Medicare were once called socialist programs and said she would work with whoever advances housing, health care, and education, labels aside. The architecture does not require the governor to call herself a socialist. It requires the network that Obama left in place to keep producing the candidates and the voters who elect them.

Trump named the continuity. Mass arrivals under successive Democratic administrations, NGO-supported street actions, and a former president who kept both a home and an office inside the capital form one structure. Presidents traditionally exit. Obama did not. The office in Washington is the public evidence that the exit was never intended. Everything else follows from that decision to remain.
