WASHINGTON — The question is no longer theoretical. How far would a corporate-conglomerate state go to keep a president from signing the bills that cut its wires? Far enough to light a war on a calendar. Far enough to break a truce it did not want. Far enough to make the pump, the freight bill, and the evening news do the work a Senate filibuster used to do.
Watch what happened in mid-September. President Trump said Ukraine and Russia had agreed not to hit energy targets. Diesel, he said, was hurting the world. Kyiv wanted more paper. Moscow praised the idea and talked sanctions. Then the fires came back — Kapotnya, Slavneft-YANOS, plants already on the 2026 hit list. The International Energy Agency had already counted a successful strike on a Russian refinery about every three days for most of the year. OPEC+ froze October output. WTI spent the month leaping and falling by amounts no American well explains in a day. That is not weather. That is a valve.
A sitting president who can pass citizenship proof for the ballot, energy permits, and spending limits is a threat to the machine that lives on managed emergencies. The EU familiars of the same class — the commissions, the funds, the “governance” shops that treat American midterms as a risk asset — do not need to land troops in Virginia. They need a headline, a strait, a drone swarm, a diesel number that makes the voter blame the man who just took office. Collusion does not always look like a signed pact. It looks like the same talking points, the same pause, the same sudden noise.
They have already tried the softer tools: lawfare, a raid, a mug shot, a court that runs the clock past an election, a Senate that shelves the SAVE Act and calls it procedure. When those dull, the hotter tools come out. Conflict is the last appropriation. It spends public fear and private inventory at the same time.
