WASHINGTON — An Army flight surgeon now sitting between Pete Hegseth and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is opening a stack the last Pentagon preferred to treat as noise: 2,544 death reports filed on service members after COVID-19 vaccination, plus about 55,000 other adverse-event reports. Lt. Col. Theresa Long, an aerospace-medicine physician with a public-health degree, was named senior military medical adviser to Kennedy while still reporting to Defense. She says she wants the review done in a year.
The number is real. The meaning is not automatic. Those 2,544 files live in VAERS, the open federal system anyone can write into. A death after a shot is not a death from a shot. CDC language on the system is blunt: a report does not prove cause. That caveat is why institutions used VAERS as a suggestion box and then walked away. It is also why families who buried a 22-year-old do not accept “suggestion box” as a eulogy.
Long has already said, under oath, that she personally knows of 28 troops whose deaths she attributes to the vaccines and has cited an 82 percent pregnancy-loss figure among vaccinated service members. The Defense Department’s March 2026 report to Congress does not back those claims. It found no link between COVID vaccination — including in pregnancy — and stillbirth or pre-eclampsia. On 16 of 17 conditions studied, infection looked worse than vaccination. Myocarditis and pericarditis rose for a short window after the shot, then faded; infection carried a far higher spike. That is the official paper. It is not a death-by-death autopsy of the 2,544.
So the fight is about method. DoD measured incidence. Long wants names, files, and timelines. Hegseth and Kennedy put a doctor who already distrusts the rollout in the chair. Critics will call it a political hunt. Supporters will call the last four years a political burial. Both can be true at once: VAERS is messy, and a government that mandated a product for every uniform owes more than a footnote.
Young troops did not get a choice. They got an order. If even a fraction of those reports are signal, the country needs the fraction. If they are noise, the country needs that said with the records open, not with another press line about “safe and effective.” The files exist. Someone is finally reading them.
