WASHINGTON — Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said the quiet part on camera: the Democratic Socialists of America, she charged, are “absolutely funded and tied” to the Chinese Communist Party. The clip hit X and did not bounce. The question is not whether Beijing runs influence operations in America. It does. The question is how close that machinery sits to the politicians now defining the Democratic left.
Start with the network, not the slogan. Neville Roy Singham, the Shanghai-based donor under federal scrutiny, has poured tens of millions into groups that share stages and mailing lists with the hard left — The People’s Forum, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, Code Pink. Those groups do not need a Beijing letterhead. They need a hall, a bus, and a candidate who will show up. Zohran Mamdani has. DSA calls New York its political home for him. Newsweek reviewed DSA China Working Group minutes in which members discussed contacts with CCP officials, trips, and a habit of ducking Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Uyghurs so as not to offend the host. That is not a rumor mill. That is minutes.
Money around Mamdani is messier than a party dues statement. A super PAC backing him took six-figure checks from former AppLovin executives at a firm short-sellers tied to a major Chinese shareholder. Relatives in the Singham orbit donated to a Mamdani PAC. City records also flagged thousands in foreign-address donations his campaign had to unwind. None of that is a wire from the Politburo. All of it is the pattern United Front work is built for: cutouts, associations, “community” checks, and plausible deniability.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not funded by a CCP slush fund on the public FEC tape. She lives on small donors. What she has done is spend campaign cash on ads with Sing Tao, a Chinese-language outlet the Justice Department treated as a foreign agent. That is influence in the other direction — paying the megaphone. It is still a Beijing-adjacent channel in New York politics, the same city where united-front associations have written checks to officeholders for years.
Bernie Sanders is the weakest link in the “all funded by the CCP” sentence. Viral claims of his secret Beijing bank accounts are satire that escaped the joke page. His record is alignment and rhetoric, not a disclosed PRC payroll.
So say it clean. The enemy is not a cartoon suitcase of cash on three desks. It is a party faction that treats the CCP as a partner in “anti-imperialism,” takes the rooms and the donors that orbit that project, and then asks Americans to trust them with cities and committees. The gate did not fall. The invitation went out. They walked through it.
