We Are Americans

Thune and Johnson Feed from the Same Trough While MAGA Gets Sacrificed

Washington — The midterms are over, and the same familiar faces are already back in the building with the same smiles. Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson spent the last two years telling the country they were fighting for election integrity, border security, and the America First agenda. Then they quietly kept the SAVE America Act off the floor through pro forma sessions and procedural excuses while Democrats ran the same mail-in and drop-box system that delivered them power before.

You cannot have cops without bad guys. That is the unspoken rule that keeps the permanent political class in business. Thune and Johnson do not need to defeat Democrats. They need Democrats in power just long enough to generate the next round of outrage, fundraising appeals, and federal spending bills. If the SAVE America Act had reached the floor and passed with voter ID and proof of citizenship requirements, the argument that Democrats would have lost control of both chambers is not a stretch. The bill never got that chance. Instead, the election machinery stayed intact, Democrats took the House and Senate, and the cycle reset on schedule.

Now Thune and Johnson return to the trough. Leadership PACs and outside groups aligned with both men raised and spent hundreds of millions this cycle. Federal money will continue to flow through the same channels regardless of which party holds the gavels. The difference is that Democrats will now set the agenda on spending, regulation, and immigration. They will push the economy, jobs, and border policies in the direction their base demands. President Trump and the voters who supported him will face the lawfare and investigations that come with a Democratic Congress. Thune and Johnson will issue statements about “fighting for the American people” while the PAC checks clear.

This is not a conspiracy theory. It is the documented pattern of modern Washington. Leaders protect the institutional rules that keep them relevant—the filibuster when it blocks the other side, the fundraising networks that never sleep, and the procedural tools that let them avoid votes their base wants. Ordinary Americans do not write the checks that keep these operations running. The donors who do write those checks do not care which party is temporarily on top as long as the machinery stays profitable.

The voters who believed the SAVE America Act was a priority watched it stall. The voters who expected their representatives to close the election loopholes that Democrats have used for years watched those loopholes remain open. Thune and Johnson will now spend the next two years explaining why they could not deliver while collecting the same support that arrives no matter who wins. That is the real cycle. The rest is theater.
