Washington DC – April 3, 2026
Senate Majority Leader John Thune appears to be deliberately slow-walking the SAVE Act to its death, raising serious questions about whether he is just another deep state hack protecting the swamp instead of American voters.
The House passed the SAVE Act months ago with strong Republican support. The bill simply requires proof of U.S. citizenship before anyone can register to vote in federal elections. Polls show 80-85% of Americans — including large majorities of independents — support it.
Yet in the Senate, Thune has refused to take the aggressive steps needed to overcome the Democrat filibuster. Despite having the majority, he has not forced a talking filibuster, refused to change Senate rules, and shows no urgency to bring the bill to a final vote. The Senate left for recess last week with the SAVE Act effectively stalled and bleeding out.
Critics inside the GOP say Thune’s inaction is intentional. By allowing the bill to die quietly, he avoids a messy fight with Democrats while giving establishment Republicans cover ahead of the midterms. Many America First conservatives now openly call Thune a “deep state hack” who prioritizes Senate club rules and donor interests over securing elections.
President Trump and millions of voters demanded the SAVE Act as a top priority to close the loophole that allows non-citizens to register and potentially vote. Thune’s handling of the bill suggests he is more interested in maintaining the status quo than delivering on the America First mandate that gave Republicans the Senate.
If Thune continues to let the SAVE Act die in the Senate, it will be one of the biggest betrayals of 2026. Americans deserve leaders who fight for election integrity — not career politicians who let critical reforms quietly disappear.
The message is becoming clearer every day: the Senate GOP establishment may be the biggest obstacle to real change.
