LONDON — Britain is on the brink of installing its seventh prime minister in just ten years, extending a period of chronic instability that began with the 2016 Brexit referendum. Keir Starmer’s abrupt resignation as Labour leader and prime minister after less than two years in office has cleared the path for Andy Burnham, the veteran Greater Manchester Mayor and newly elected MP, to assume the role.
Burnham, a long-time Labour insider who previously served in cabinets under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, has positioned himself as a “socialist” champion of working-class communities in the North. His swift rise follows a strong by-election victory and endorsements from key figures like Wes Streeting, minimizing the chance of a contested leadership race. Supporters hail his local government experience and populist appeal; critics see another Westminster insider promising bold change while delivering continuity in a broken system.
Since David Cameron’s tenure ended amid the Brexit vote, the UK has cycled through Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss (whose brief disastrous term lasted just 49 days), Rishi Sunak, and Starmer. Each faced crises—economic fallout from Brexit, pandemic recovery, inflation spikes, migration pressures, and internal party rebellions. GDP growth has lagged peers, public services strain under funding shortfalls, and trust in institutions remains low. Burnham inherits these challenges plus regional divides and questions over Labour’s direction after Starmer’s unfulfilled promises.
Whether Burnham can stabilize the ship or accelerate the decline remains uncertain. His track record in Manchester shows competence in devolved powers, but national governance demands broader consensus. Another short-lived premiership would further erode confidence in Britain’s political class, reinforcing perceptions of a nation adrift—from post-imperial power to post-Brexit uncertainty. Voters weary of revolving-door leadership may demand more than rhetoric from the latest “working-class hero.”
