In the ongoing spectacle of congressional hearings, Dr. Anthony Fauci has once again been trotted out as the token villain of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lawmakers hurl soundbites, cameras roll, and the public is left with the illusion of accountability. But if Congress is serious about justice, it must stop making Fauci the fall guy and start subpoenaing the CEOs who profited immensely from the pandemic.
Fauci, a public servant, advised and communicated policy. He did not manufacture vaccines, set prices, or rake in record profits. The executives of Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and AstraZeneca, on the other hand, oversaw operations that earned billions—while often shielding data from independent scrutiny and securing unprecedented liability waivers.
Critics argue that these pharmaceutical leaders should sit in the same hot seat. Their decisions on clinical trial transparency, vaccine mandates, and side-effect reporting affected millions of lives. If Fauci is grilled for nearly a decade of pandemic decisions, why are the heads of companies that developed the products—and who personally enriched themselves along the way—not facing the same questioning?
The current hearings risk becoming a dog and pony media show, engineered for soundbites rather than real accountability. Calling Fauci to testify for hours while excusing corporate executives is a deflection. It protects the financial interests that shape public health policy and distracts from the broader system that produced the pandemic response.
Real justice demands that all power players answer for their roles. That includes scientists, politicians, and, yes, the pharmaceutical boardrooms. If Congress genuinely seeks to uncover what happened, it cannot stop at one elderly doctor with a red tie. It must summons the CEOs and demand answers under oath.
Until then, the hearings remain what critics have long suspected: political theater, not justice.
