Fauci Was Never the Magician

Anthony Fauci has been useful. He is the public face of a system that funded high-risk coronavirus research, managed the early messaging, and later oversaw the response that delivered extraordinary profits to pharmaceutical companies. Focusing the anger on him alone, however, mistakes the salesman for the architecture.

What was done under the label “gain-of-function” was the genetic alteration of pathogens to enhance traits of concern—transmissibility, receptor binding, host range. American labs performed this work. Chinese labs performed this work. U.S. taxpayer money helped finance the Chinese side through EcoHealth Alliance. The DEFUSE proposal discussed inserting furin cleavage sites into SARS-related viruses. The research was collaborative, not outsourced solely because Americans refused to touch it. The terminology itself—“gain-of-function,” later “enhanced potential pandemic pathogens”—served as bureaucratic cover for experiments whose practical meaning was the deliberate enhancement of dangerous traits.

China’s response after the outbreak began was not the behavior of a government confident in a natural spillover story. Doctors were silenced. Citizen journalists disappeared. Early sequences and lab records were restricted. Researchers who fell ill in late 2019 were never made available for independent interview. This is consistent with a regime protecting itself from the consequences of a laboratory incident. Whether that incident was an accident or something more intentional, the opacity was systematic.

The commercial outcome is clearer. Vaccine manufacturers recorded tens of billions in revenue under liability protections and government purchase agreements. The same institutional networks that funded the research later managed the response and the messaging. Accountability has remained largely theatrical: hearings, statements, limited debarments. No comprehensive investigation with full access to laboratory notebooks, early case data, and funding decision trails has been completed.

Fauci can be criticized, questioned, and held to account for his role. Treating him as the primary villain allows the larger apparatus—funding decisions, dual-use research incentives, regulatory capture, and the refusal of China to open the relevant records—to escape structural scrutiny. Real investigation requires following the money, the grants, the proposals, and the biosafety failures without stopping at the most convenient public face. Anything less is performance.
