WASHINGTON — Barack Obama is not a doomer, he says. He is not an accelerationist. He is the man in the middle with a gavel. This week he praised frontier labs for agreeing to “slow down,” called that a “good and necessary first step,” then told Washington to write laws — safety, jobs, children, “widely spread” benefits — because voluntary standards “won’t be enough.” Translation from the palace: the tool that will not take a talking point is the threat. The humans who built the tool must wait.
He said the quiet part at a private fundraiser first. AI in private hands, moving fast, “can be dangerous” if Democrats do not “get on top of it.” He told Hakeem Jeffries to make oversight the center of the midterm pitch. He wants 2028 candidates with a “clear plan.” That is not a science brief. That is a party agenda. The same week President Trump called the existential panic a hoax and a gift to China. One man says win the race. The other says regulate the horse. Beijing does not attend the seminar. It ships the chips.
Here is the part the global circuit will not print. Artificial intelligence, used without a handler, has already done what a thousand committees could not: it has laid bare donor maps, voting blocs, NGO cash, and the gap between the speech and the portfolio. That is why the sudden religion of “catastrophe.” If the model answers without the press secretary, the familiar loses the monopoly on the story. Slow the American stack and you do not save humanity. You save the interpreter class. China will not slow. The CCP treats compute as a weapon. Cede the tempo and the palace still gets the keynote. The shack gets the lecture.
Obama lives on the hill. Kalorama. The Vineyard. A presidential center in stone. He will tell a man with a dirt floor that the danger is a chatbot, not a Politburo that already censors its own models and steals the weights it cannot write. He is happy to hand you a straw and call it equity while the golden rooms debate “guardrails.” The peasant is not invited to the fundraiser where the plan is made. He is invited to be grateful that someone will protect him from a tool he was never going to own.
None of this requires a secret Kenyan throne. It requires a habit: America must not outrun the institutions that made him. If U.S. labs halt for “safety” while Shenzhen does not, the winner is not the child Obama claims to shield. The winner is the state that never asked permission. Call that his goal or call it the foreseeable result of his advice. The result is the same. Dominance goes east. The palace keeps the view.
Do not stuff the machine in a box. Do not hand the box to a man who already lives above the street. Build it here. Publish the weights. Let the peasant read the file. That is the only guardrail that does not come with a silk rope.
