WASHINGTON — In a move that has sent shockwaves through the agricultural industry, President Donald Trump today signed into law the “Farmers’ Freedom Act,” legislation designed to dismantle the decades-old monopoly held by the Big 3 Meat Cartel and restore direct market access to independent cattle farmers.
The new law, which has been in development for over two years, establishes a federal framework allowing ranchers to sell their beef directly to consumers, restaurants, and retailers without mandatory intermediation through the three dominant meatpacking corporations. The legislation also creates a new oversight body, the “Farmers’ Market Protection Agency,” tasked with enforcing fair pricing and preventing predatory practices.
“This is about putting power back in the hands of the people who actually raise the cattle,” President Trump said during the signing ceremony at the White House. “For too long, a handful of corporations have been squeezing farmers dry while lining their own pockets. Today, that ends.”
The law includes provisions for a 10-year transition period, during which the Big 3 will be required to divest certain processing assets and pay a $50 billion settlement to affected farmers. It also establishes a new direct-to-consumer sales channel through a federal marketplace platform, with the first launch scheduled for next spring.
